G ENETICS is 75 years old. Volume 1, number 1 was dated January, 1916 and with this issue the journal begins its 76th year. At this ripe age, the journal shows none of the telltale signs of senescence; it is still in the growth phase. Although the science of genetics has changed enormously-has indeed been revolutionized-the important features of GENETICS have remained intact. It is still, as it was in 1916, “a periodical record of investigations bearing on heredity and variation.” The relationship between GENETICS and the Genetics Society of America has always been close, although the journal did not become the official organ of the Society until 1963. The very first article was pure sterling; I can’t imagine a better beginning. It was C. B. BRIDGES’ classic, “Nondisjunction as proof of the chromosome theory of heredity.” Here he showed that each genetic misbehavior was accompanied by a cytologically visible chromosome error, clinching the argument for the chromosomal basis of heredity. It is hard now to understand why this idea was so slow to be universally accepted. There were still skeptics in 1916, but BRIDGES’ study left no room for doubt. What a way to launch a new journal! Before discussing other pioneering articles, I’ll give some statistics. The original number of subscribers was 270. The present mailing list is about 5000. The journal began with 6 issues per year. This was adhered to, with occasional extra numbers to shorten the backlog, until 1960 when the present monthly schedule was adopted. The original price was $6 per year, and this continued until 1951 when, with considerable reluctance, the Editorial Board raised it to $8. The journal originally gave each author 100 free reprints with covers. This was later reduced to 50 without covers, and by 1953 none was free. The first volume had 627 pages. In contrast, the three volumes in 1990 totaled 3022 pages.
